this edition is coming to you from the wilds of jedburgh, scotland (although this playlist is being written on a glasgow-edinburgh train), and has had it’s talky-bits recorded in the back garden of regular framework contributor james wyness. meanwhile we have just spent the afternoon in glasgow, where i promise you we visited only one pub and drank one whisky, meeting with another longtime framework contributor, mark vernon, who’s name is about to become much more familiar to you, oh great framework listeners, as we announce the release of:
framework:seasonal, issue #5, summer 2013!

we’re going to try to properly hit every season this year, since we bothered to name our release series seasonal, and so we’re going to continue alternating between the compilation and single-artist formats. so our first ever summer edition is another single-artist release (although it features recordings by many different people, collected and curated by our single artist) and features a longtime favorite project of ours, mark vernon‘s archive of recordings from the east midlands tape recording clubs of the 60′s and 70′s. mark has put together a full 79 minutes for us of excerpts from this archives that focus specifically on field recording, and has included detailed notes, track information, and writing on the recordists and their project. he’s also produced an accompanying edition of framework:afield, which we’ll be airing next week to celebrate the release. this is really a great one, folks, we think you’re going to love it, so take this opportunity to support framework radio and preorder your copy now. usual conditions apply: you can, as of now, reserve a copy with a donation of 20€ or more made via paypal from the framework website. show us you care.

the ‘official’ release date for this issue is the summer solstice, june 21st. i know you’ll all turn a blind eye to the fact that i won’t be back in estonia and able to fill any orders until early july…

but on the show! this show features some great work, untreated recordings of sacred spaces, another wonderful release from the unfathomless label, artists from turkey, iceland, sweden, the uk, and the united states, and another framework intro from allentown, pennsylvania from scott sherk‘s sound art students.

again, we are always looking for new material, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated framework:afield series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address at the bottom of this mail. if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

I was struck by how much he knew about these small creatures and became fascinated by the videos he’s recorded of them in his lab. When reading more about fruit flies myself I discovered that the sounds they make are most often courtship songs.

When I asked Peter if he knew more about this, he put me in touch with the Senior Lecturer of Neuroscience at UCL, Joerg Albert. We met for the first time six months ago when I first visited him at his lab in the UCL Ear Institute. He gave me a heavily condensed (but no less dazzling) story of the fruit fly love songs. Two hours later I left the Ear Institute somewhat stunned by the amount of information Joerg had conveyed.

There are 2000-3000 different species of fruit flies existing and every species has a unique song consisting of different pulse patterns and differences in pitch. In the mating ritual the male fly dances for the female fly. While doing this he vibrates one of his wings creating sounds heard by the female fly. This ‘song’ consists of different pulse patterns and ‘humming sounds’ which the female responds to by being available for copulation. For many species, reproduction doesn’t happen (or is much less likely) without this singing ritual. Having travelled extensively over the last two years to study indigenous music of the world, I couldn’t help but think that fruit flies have their own type of folk music as well.

I started listening to the recordings Joerg made of the courtship songs, using them as an inspiration for my own music. Listening to them was a magical experience but also quite a challenge to work with as I didn’t wanted to ‘mess’ with them too much. To me that felt too much like improvising on a theme, without anybody knowing the theme, so no points of recognition.

I spent half a year conducting creative experiments with this material, musical and conceptual, some of which happened in a residency in London led by sound artist Bill Thompson. He introduced me to transducers and I started using them with recordings of fruit fly songs. Experimenting with materials found in and around the building, I ended up using an old refrigerator box for much of the week. Basically the box became a mini theatre for one person sitting listening in the darkness. Using the transducers, I played the songs of the fruit flies through the box whose acoustic qualities not only magnified the sounds, but also made the pulses of the song physically tangible. It was as though you were sitting inside the song of a fruit fly! Together with the song of the fruit fly, I also played a recording of an improvisation by shakuhachi player Clive Bell (who I met during an improvisation project we did together for the BBC Symphony Orchestra – Total Immersion – Sounds of Japan day) whose improvisation was inspired by the fruit fly courtship song.

The box experiment was a perfect embodiment of how I want to approach these hidden sounds in my work; I want to focus people’s attention on it, open this secret universe of sound to the audience, and frame the sounds in a creative way. I really liked what Joerg said in the interview: “What science and art do is translate things into different languages and slightly transpose them to facilitate some sort of appreciation (…) it has to do with reflecting and representing a certain way our world is constructed. We have a certain insight, we realise something and then we communicate that. We communicate this from a certain perspective, from an individual stand, so we filter the world.”

The project continues with Bill and I collaborating together with Joerg over the next two years. First, though, I will do two multimedia performances myself in which I take they audience on the journey that I have been on over the last half year, introducing them to the world of fruit flies. Special guest starring in the performance: a fruit fly singing his song live on stage.

we featured not one, but two christopher mcfall releases in this edition, both of which have been waiting patiently in our to-play pile for quite some time – one solo, and one a collaborative release on the always-intriguing unfathomless label with italian artist luigi turra. also waiting patiently (in fact, so long that we are slightly embarrassed) has been matt davies‘ self-released collection of latvian plant recordings, all untreated and unmanipulated. we also heard sounds from the yugen art net label by norwegian artist terje paulsen, a soundwalk by jerusalem-based artist lior pinsky, and another collection of recent uploads to the aporee soundmaps in our continuing aporee segment series. all this began with a framework intro recorded for us in spain by pedro bericat, purveryor of mute sound records.

this is the last regular edition before the sound diaries symposium in the uk – we will be presenting framework in the context of the symposium’s theme: how are we using field recordings to change the world? well, we’ll see about that, and we hope you will too; if you’re nearby, please come to oxford, join the symposium, and say hello! places are free, but must be reserved in advance. all the details here: http://www.sound-diaries.co.uk/symposium-2013.

recently luís antero, curator of the green field recordings label, and producer of the radio show o colecionador de sons (the sound collector), invited me to produce a piece to celebrate one of the last broadcasts of his show before leaving on an extended hiatus. it was an honor, and i took the opportunity to explore an idea that had recently come up. the resulting work, entitled raadio mälu (radio memory in estonian), debuted on his show last week, on the the 13th of may, and with luís’ kind agreement i am rebroadcasting is as this week’s edition of framework:afield. some further notes:

raadio mälu
by patrick mcginley

a few months ago i found a small portable radio, dating probably from the 1980′s and made during soviet times, is a secondhand shop in the small village of mooste in southeast estonia. i have a thing for old radios, so i bought it, and it got me to thinking about the place of radio, not in this present world of internet streaming, podcasting and so forth, but in our past, and in our memories. i know i have distinct memories of radio, radio stations, djs, events, situations, and even places that i relate to radio from my own past, growing up in boston, during my student days in western massachusetts, all the way through my years at the resonance fm studios in london, and my attempts now to listen to estonian radio to improve my language skills. i wondered if this particular radio, alien to me but possibly familiar to estonians, might trigger memories for those around me, and i decided to find out.

i composed this piece from four elements: memories, stories and observations from a handful of estonians, related upon being presented with this particular radio for the first time; sonic material produced by the radio itself, both when tuned to and tuned between stations; field recordings from the surrounding landscape, vibrations in the immediate airwaves that have carried these radio signals; and archive material from estonian radio’s past, both in and before the country’s soviet era.

the estonians interviewed were given the choice of speaking in their native language or in english; two chose estonian, and two english. i have left the estonian language untranslated in the audio itself – much of what is being communicated can be heard in the tones of their voices, and through shared vocabulary. that said, i am providing a written translation for the estonian language sections below.

::: Alfred ::: 09:22-15:29 :::
It is, yes, made in USSR. It’s from Russian times. But with this one you couldn’t listen to Voice of America. This gets mediumwave and longwave. For Voice of America we used shortwave, 25, 31, and 49 meter bands. But this is… yes, with this one it should be possible… wait, let me check. It’s stuck in the bag. “Selga”; you see? It’s just as I thought, Selga. Produced in Latvia. Latvia made things like this. But let’s see which wavelengths it has – should be mediumwave and longwave. I had one just like this; I used to listen to German music with it. They played very good German music, on mediumwave. And it works? Yes, it’s got mediumwave and longwave. I used to listen to broadcasts in English on shortwave. We also had one of these Riga radios at home. They made a lot of these in Riga. All kinds of different machines. And then we also had a Radiotehnika, I used that one a lot too. I couldn’t speak any English yet, but i just listened to how good it sounded. It has such a nice timbre. Mother also used to listen to English radio – or which language did you listen to? Did you listen to Estonian? Mother doesn’t remember anymore which language she listened to. But yes, there was really good music. So this is from the Radiotehnika factory – RRR: Rigas Radiotehnika Rubnika. RRR, the factory’s mark. “Rigas Radiotehnika Rubnika” in Latvian. Selga 405. 29 rubles. Radio receiver. Look how well it’s preserved. Still working. It’s old already, probably 30, 35 years at least. Quality mark; this is a quality mark. SSSR. Here you choose longwave or mediumwave. It works well. ah, German. German? ah, one of them is speaking German, the other English. It works very well. Italiano – no, maybe not. No, I don’t know. Still English probably. Italian? He’s probably talking about the pope, who’s giving up his position. Is he giving up his position? It’s very sensitive, receiving very well. Don’t know what language that is. And what langauge is that? Ha, Big Brother language. Mine was light colored and had a colored bag as well. And a strap, like this one. This is of course newer than mine was. But that one I think broke. I don’t remember what was wrong with it.

::: Mari ::: 51:18-55:09 :::
It’s a radio, made in the Soviet Union. It has a black leather cover, a bag that has a strap that can be adjusted to different lengths, so that you can, for example, put it over your shoulder on the street and take it with you. Very comfortable. The bag has a nice soft texture on the inside. It has two snaps that you can close it with. The radio itself is rectangular, with two buttons: one for the volume, the other maybe for the frequency. The bag has one round hole, through which you can see the frequency indicator. And then there are many small round holes, to let the sound through. On the back there are some more holes. I don’t know what these can be for. Maybe for the radio to get ventilation. And then there is one hole through which headphones can be attached. And there is one more button with which, probably, different wavelengths – longwave, shortwave – can be selected; you can choose. Many words have been embossed on the bag, for example “made in USSR”. The radio is totally rectangular; the button is round and the speaker part is rectangular with small holes. The brand is Selga. The words on the indicator are green, and the pointer is red, and a bit transparent. On the indicator there are numbers: 1.5; 2; 3; 4; 5.6; 6.5; 8; 10 and 15. On the back is written Radio Prijemnik. Selga-405, type APP 4. Cost 29 rubles.

recently luís antero, curator of the green field recordings label, and producer of the radio show o colecionador de sons (the sound collector), invited me to produce a piece to celebrate one of the last broadcasts of his show before leaving on an extended hiatus. it was an honor, and i took the opportunity to explore an idea that had recently come up. the resulting work, entitled raadio mälu (radio memory in estonian), debuted on his show last week, on the the 13th of may, and with luís' kind agreement i am rebroadcasting is as this week's edition of framework:afield. some further notes:
raadio mälu
by patrick mcginley
a few months ago i found a small portable radio, dating probably from the 1980′s and made during soviet times, is a secondhand shop in the small village of mooste in southeast estonia. i have a thing for old radios, so i bought it, and it got me to thinking about the place of radio, not in this present world of internet streaming, podcasting and so forth, but in our past, and in our memories. i know i have distinct memories of radio, radio stations, djs, events, situations, and even places that i relate to radio from my own past, growing up in boston, during my student days in western massachusetts, all the way through my years at the resonance fm studios in london, and my attempts now to listen to estonian radio to improve my language skills. i wondered if this particular radio, alien to me but possibly familiar to estonians, might trigger memories for those around me, and i decided to find out.
i composed this piece from four elements: memories, stories and observations from a handful of estonians, related upon being presented with this particular radio for the first time; sonic material produced by the radio itself, both when tuned to and tuned between stations; field recordings from the surrounding landscape, vibrations in the immediate airwaves that have carried these radio signals; and archive material from estonian radio’s past, both in and before the country’s soviet era.
the estonians interviewed were given the choice of speaking in their native language or in english; two chose estonian, and two english. i have left the estonian language untranslated in the audio itself – much of what is being communicated can be heard in the tones of their voices, and through shared vocabulary. that said, i am providing a written translation for the estonian language sections below.
::: Alfred ::: 09:22-15:29 :::
Selga 405. 29 rubles.</itunes:summary>

spring has finally sprung here in estonia – we’ve had sunny days and high temperatures (for us, anyway) and the bbq grills have come out. this is the first completely normal regular edition we’ve produced in quite awhile, what with editions of framework:ephemera, framework:afield, and the framework:seasonal fundraising editions we produced before leaving for three weeks in the middle east. so the last time we walked outside and recorded the talky bits (that’s the technical term) for a show, there was still much, much snow on the ground. very different from today’s sun and grass and birds.

very pleased to see the return of our occasional aporee maps segment this well, with a nice tour starting in the uk, moving on the italy, the united states, and ending up in india. you’ll find direct links to their maps locations below. we also heard tracks from a showcase release of lithuanian sound artists, a great look into a blossoming scene. also some textual work: ross adams sound poem by and with the sami people in northern finland, and kristoff k. roll’s dreamscapes recorded in france. and a few unreleased submissions from artists based here in estonia, both recorded while abroad: taavi tatsi almost recorded a framework intro for us while in portugal, and polina tšerkassova recorded the beautiful wave organ in zadar, croatia. all this began with our first ever framework introduction recorded in mexico! keep them coming!

// this show is dedicated to the unknown musicians I have recorded over the past years during what guy debord describes as ‘dérives’ or ‘psychogeographic drifts’: the experimental exploration of the environment through coincidence and other methods to disturb your normal behavior or motivations as a pedestrian or car driver. drifting is the search for an ecstatic moment or ‘ecstatic truth’, like werner herzog says. if I get on a track – I try to document what I find //

// sometimes I had to borrow a cellphone, or I used a crappy digital cam to record // that’s why this show isn´t a high-end surround sound field report // this radio show is about these ecstatic moments // for example: I followed people to a bar in hungary … and some solo entertainer is playing … people drink beer and dance // I walked through a block party and ended up in a street riot … people dance to reggae music and you hear bottles shattering on police cars // you will hear music from some gatherings, a powwow, indonesian rituals, music from a record shop in turkey, from hippy parties or bonfire music in the mid-west //

// some of these records are done before GPS was in every technical instrument … that´s why this show isn´t a sound-mapping cartography // most of the time I don’t even know what the people are singing about and I don´t know the names of the bands – if they even have names // sometimes I can’t locate the places anymore, because the goal of psychogeography is to get lost, and to create an altering reality //

 <itunes:summary>(http://www.frameworkradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/framework_dirty-tracks-e1367826561347.png)this edition of framework:afield, entitled dirty tracks, has been produced in germany by stefan paulus. stefan writes about the process of piecing this work together from his psychogeographic drifts:
// this show is dedicated to the unknown musicians I have recorded over the past years during what guy debord describes as 'dérives' or 'psychogeographic drifts': the experimental exploration of the environment through coincidence and other methods to disturb your normal behavior or motivations as a pedestrian or car driver. drifting is the search for an ecstatic moment or 'ecstatic truth', like werner herzog says. if I get on a track – I try to document what I find //
// sometimes I had to borrow a cellphone, or I used a crappy digital cam to record // that’s why this show isn´t a high-end surround sound field report // this radio show is about these ecstatic moments // for example: I followed people to a bar in hungary ... and some solo entertainer is playing ... people drink beer and dance // I walked through a block party and ended up in a street riot ... people dance to reggae music and you hear bottles shattering on police cars // you will hear music from some gatherings, a powwow, indonesian rituals, music from a record shop in turkey, from hippy parties or bonfire music in the mid-west //
// some of these records are done before GPS was in every technical instrument … that´s why this show isn´t a sound-mapping cartography // most of the time I don't even know what the people are singing about and I don´t know the names of the bands – if they even have names // sometimes I can’t locate the places anymore, because the goal of psychogeography is to get lost, and to create an altering reality //

this week we had the great pleasure of airing another edition of framework:ephemera, our occasional guest-selected regular edition, with conversation recorded with said guest in her or her hometown. this edition was enabled by recent travels in israel and palestine, where, while in tel aviv/jaffa, i was able to meet and talk with israeli musician / sound artist / teacher / networker eran sachs. eran picked great sounds for us from his collection, almost all of which were new to our airwaves, and had a lot to say about why he chose them.

there is a site for eran’s work coming soon; in the meantime you can search the great intratubes for his name, or that of his platform with co-conspirator alex drool, primate arena, and you will find many things.

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in germany by regular contributor d.l. lutz. notes from the producer:

Earscape “Insects”

“Some hear bug music, some hear people music. All depends on your ears,” wrote Wafu in 1866 in Kyoto, according to David Rothenberg. This earscape is meant to zoom you right into the microscopic world of insects.

For a lot of sound artists, this acoustic realm seems to be fascinating – maybe primarily because the different scale of these beings also results in completely different dynamics of movement and articulation. “Insects” concentrates on this aspect; harvestmen fluttering around lamplights, myriads of maggots crawling on a compost pile, orientation flights of bees and cricket talks are examples of the rich morphology of insect sound.

The range of sounds goes from untreated field recordings to highly refined electro-acoustic pieces, like that of Loufopoulos who wants the listener to experience “a journey on the back of a bee”; interlaced are anecdotal and abstract representations of mechanical, animal and human movement that broaden the range of suggestion. Some pieces, especially the older ones like Bouhalassa’s, are produced with considerable technical effort to create soundclouds from single samples before modern software systems easily allowed for these effects.

So join in on an entertaining tour-de-force flight into the realm of bugs and critters!

Some pieces, especially the older ones like Bouhalassa’s, are produced with considerable technical effort to create soundclouds from single samples before modern software systems easily allowed for these effects.
So join in on an entertaining tour-de-force flight into the realm of bugs and critters!

this edition draws our spring fundraiser to a close – for the rest of the season we’ll be scaling back our constant shouting about donations and subscriptions, but that doesn’t let you off the hook! we still can’t do this without you, and so one last time, before we leave you in peace, we’re prodding you to consider becoming a framework supporter. we’ve only had one new monthly subscriber sign up during this fundraiser – come on people! we know you’re listening! we suspect you like what you hear! so show us you care! 10€ per month, 5€ per month, even 1€ per month, in exchange for 4 hours of great radio! it’s nothing, right? or if you can’t manage a monthly contribution, you can still make a one-time donation, and every little bit helps. so visit the framework website, and look at the donations bar on the right. click, and give! we need you!

in this edition we heard the final 3 contributions to issue #4 of our framework:seasonal series, by terje paulsen, luís antero, and maile colbert. we return to regular programming now, but issue #4 of our series will remain available from the framework website, if you haven’t had a chance to pick it up yet. we’re very proud of this one, and we think you’ll like it to. but don’t take our word for it – chris whitehead recently posted this review to the wonderful field reporter blog:

http://thefieldreporter.wordpress.com/2013/04/07/248/

we heard two other releases in this edition, both of which we like a lot – marc behrens recent release queendom maybe rise, composed from ‘contradicting elements’ recorded in queensland, australia in 2011, and a collaboration between pascal battus (rotating surfaces, found objects), bertrand gauguet (saxophones, effects) and eric la casa (microphones, recordings) entitled chantier 1. chantier 1 consists of 2 parts, improvised sessions recorded on a working building site, and studio recordings made in response to that building site. the recordings are, as would be expected, impeccable, and the integration of performed elements of the soundspace itself completely intriguing.
