yannick dauby - taî-pak thiaⁿ saⁿ piàn

a special new format this week – we’ve been traveling a lot lately, as you might have noticed, and we’ve been finding ourselves in the company of some very interesting folks, so we thought, why not have some guests in our regular editions? at the moment we’re in taipei with yannick dauby, so we asked him to pick some favorites from his cd collection, and to talk to us a little about them and about sound in taipei. we hope to be able to try this out with more folks, as we continue our travels in the u.s. (provided we can get anywhere near boston with hurricane sandy in the way). meanwhile, this new occasional format needs a name – we have our current framework:afield series, and the past framework:focus series (which long time listeners may remember) – any suggestions for this one?

so yannick chose for us recently published (although not quite new) sounds by dale lloyd, classic work by etant donnés and stephen p. mcgreevy (from his first collection of vlf recordings on irdial discs), and untreated wildlife recordings by artificial memory trace (the synthesizer-like tones of the amazonian organfish, an animal who’s electrical signals were accidentally captured with a hydrophone) and andrew skeoch (the beautiful harmonizing of the white-capped monarch of the solomon islands). we also listened to extracts from yannick’s own cd of compositions using recordings of this very noisy city itself, which we recommend highly – making compelling works from urban recordings is no easy task, but this one is a dense, intricate ear-feast.

again, we are always looking for new material, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated framework:afield series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address at the bottom of this mail. if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
