A vacant stall at a flea market re-imagined as a theatre set…Â the attic of a derelict building, infested with pigeons… a dank, concrete basement in an artists atelier…
Static Cinema is an exploration of several evocative spaces captured and interrogated for meaning by the microphone. The different recording locations function as spontaneous mise-en-scène waiting in suspense for an event yet to occur, or an actor still to make their entrance. Through a composed soundscape of field recordings and improvised music, a fictitious narrative develops between these seemingly disparate locales. The edits are often dramatic perspective shifts that equate to different shots or scenes in a film with long shots, close-ups, panning shots and zooms. It remains a narrative sound ‘film’ missing its lead actors – in the absence of other characters the sounds themselves take the lead and become the focus. The world speaks louder when man remains mute.
All sounds recorded in Trondheim (Norway), Berlin, Düsseldorf (Germany), Dundee and Balmerino (Scotland) between 2007 and 2009.
